• The Princesses’ Library

In 2017 the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin managed to obtain a vast collection of books, mainly from the 18th century that had previously belonged to the Swedish Princess Sophie Albertine – sister of Gustav III of Sweden and niece to Frederick II of Prussia. Almost miraculously the collection had been kept largely intact from the time of Sophie Albertine’s death in 1829. The unique collection consists of 1500 titles in approximately 4500 volumes, together with a few manuscripts.
The project looks closer at this collection: we wish to bring together perspectives from literary and art history, history of the book, library science, rhetoric, drama studies, Scandinavian, German and French history, as well as intellectual, social, economic and gender history. Together with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and our partners at the universities of Uppsala, Strasbourg, and Groningen we seek to develop a research program focusing on the unique material. Simultaneously we wish to implement new ways of doing interdisciplinary research, where the focus on a common material will provide a natural interface between the disciplines but also to create alternative methods of research, that reflect the complex nature of the object studied.

• Opera Geography

When in 1967 the French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez in a polemic move urged to blow up all opera houses he manifested the crises of a European institution. Opera, he claimed, had become a bourgeoise, exclusive and self-referential art-museum.  
Taking a closer look at the developments in the Scandinavian countries, however, Boulez’ polemic appears less relevant. After the Second World War, “Nordic “ opera enters a phase of prosperity culminating in the spectacular new opera houses in Helsinki (1993), Copenhagen (2005), Oslo (2008), and Reykjavik (2011). But what makes this seemingly elitist art – again – so popular? The project aims to cast light on the many interactions between urban, political and aesthetic dimension of opera in the Scandinavian countries and further the idea that these encounters between real and imagined places (re-)shape urban, national and cultural identities.
 

• Jewish-Scandinavian Relations

Continental Jewish-European history is often contrasted with the Narrative of Northern exceptionalism suggesting that the Scandinavian countries lack anti-Semitic trends in the course of the 19th and 20th century. Recent developments, however, have come to question this status and cast light on the indeed rather complex and eclectic Scandinavian-Jewish relations.
The research project explores the image of the Jew in the performing arts and in literature in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. These countries have a long tradition of Jewish characters both in theatre and in literature, which indeed differs from continental patterns. With this perspective the project focuses on the complex interactions between aesthetic, performative and political dimensions of anti-Semitism in the performing arts and cast light on the (lack of) academic discourses to approach the topic.
