From Wagner to Viking Metal

Jón Karl Helgason

Háskóli Íslands

The image of violent Scandinavian Vikings, eager to kill and be killed, became a fixed cliche in Western-European and North-American popular culture during the twentieth century. In most cases, the brutal mentality of the Vikings was linked to their heathen beliefs. During the past few decades, these ideas have been thrown about in heavy metal rock music by bands such as Manowar from the USA, Einherjer from Norway, Týr from the Faroe Islands, and even The Mighty Thor from Mexico. In his paper, Jón Karl Helgason will discuss a few recurring themes in the lyrics of some of these bands and consider to what degree these can be related to influential American Viking films from the 1920s and the 1950s and even further back to Wagner‘s 19th-century recycling of the Eddas.

'Would you like me to cut you lengthwise or crosswise.' On visual arts and medieval Icelandic literature

Bergljót Kristjánsdóttir

Háskóli Íslands

In this paper where I shall discuss visual arts and medieval Icelandic literature, I‘ll begin with briefly summarizing certain characteristics of Icelandic society in the past but then restrict myself to the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries – and mainly a few Sagas of the Icelanders. With examples I shall show how nationalism marked the reception of the sagas for a long time (partly up to our time) in arts as well as literature as I‘ll emphasise by referring to works both of Icelandic poets and authors to enlighten the artworks in question. I shall mention lost paintings as well as preserved ones; the esteemed work of „high art“ as well as comics in newspapers, drawings in a school-book and a film adaption of a saga. Thus I shall show how changes in the attitude to the sagas sometimes go hand in hand with changes of the society and a new knowledge of medieval times; and also how long old ideas live in the education and finally how the sagas and artworks which centre around them have been used in political discourse, image-shaping and as merchandise.

Grettisfærsla, das Projekt - Empfang

Bjarki Karlsson
