George RR Martin’s A World of Ice and Fire and HBO’s Game of Thrones
In this lecture I shall outline the epic features of the series (show and books) and discuss sources and their transformations. I shall argue that, although this new epic ostensibly transcends contemporary nationalist agendas in its reimagination of a range of medieval real-world societies, it nevertheless directs fans’ attentions back out to contemporary issues through its refusal of clear moral polarisation: from climate change to the treatment of refugees, from women’s rights to western interventions in the Middle East.
The lecture will be held in English.
