Summary

To this day, historical accounts and public perceptions of piracy and freebooting during the early modern period are largely focussed on the Caribbean. The important history of pirates and privateers in the Baltic Sea has, in contrast, remained a blank spot on the map of cultural, literary, social and legal history. This is despite the fact, that the phenomenon had a significant impact on the conception of law and politics during that period. Following an international, interdisciplinary and spatially conscious approach, the KOSMOS workshop at Nordeuropa-Institut sets out to develop a histoire totale of privateers and priates in the Baldic Sea during the early modern period.
